Tata Neu Plus HDFC Bank Credit Card
The HDFC Tata Neu Plus is a ₹499 co-branded card for the Tata ecosystem. It earns 2% NeuCoins on Tata Neu and partner Tata brands, and per HDFC's terms an additional up to 5% via NeuPass on selected Tata Neu categories (up to ~7% combined), plus 1% on non-Tata spends; UPI on the RuPay network earns ~1% (with a cap of 500 NeuCoins/month on the Tata Neu UPI ID bonus). HDFC states the NeuPass benefit as "additional 5% NeuCoins on selected categories on Tata Neu" — what it conditions is the SCOPE (which categories, app or website only, registration required, primary mobile number since 15 Jan 2025), not the rate. Merchant/brand/aggregator EMI earns the base 1% on principal (only SmartEMI/Dial-an-EMI earn nothing); NeuCoins can't be redeemed on Bill Payment and the app may add a convenience fee at checkout. The fee waives at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, a 499-NeuCoin welcome benefit (covers the fee) lands on your first transaction within 30 days, and you get 4 lounge visits a year (max 1/quarter) on ₹50,000 of spend in that calendar quarter. Grocery is capped at 1,000 NeuCoins a month — half the Infinity's ceiling — with utility, telecom and insurance capped at 2,000 each, and the fuel-surcharge waiver caps at ₹250 a cycle against the Infinity's ₹500. Fuel, rent, government payments, wallet and gift-card loads, vouchers and online gaming earn nothing. NeuCoins are valid 12 months from the end of the credit month, are usable only across the Tata ecosystem, and there is no cashback.

- Free NeuPass membership adds up to 5% NeuCoins on selected Tata Neu categories, on top of the 2% Tata-brand base

✕ Cons
- NeuCoins locked to Tata ecosystem — useless if you do not actively use Tata apps
- Non-Tata spend earns only 1% — significantly lower than SBI Cashback or HDFC Millennia
- Annual fee of ₹499 only justifies if you spend regularly in the Tata ecosystem (waived at ₹1 lakh)
- Grocery caps at just 1,000 NeuCoins a month — half the Infinity's, and the clearest gap between them

How to redeem rewards
Ways to convert what you earn into real value.
🎁 Spend NeuCoins across the Tata Neu app and partner brands (BigBasket, Croma, Tata CLiQ, 1mg, Air India) at ₹1 each
🎁 Not redeemable as statement credit and not transferable to airline/hotel programmes
What your Tata NeuCoins are worth
Realistic value per point by redemption route — the difference is what most people leave on the table.
Tata Neu app & partner brands ₹1 per NeuCoin across Tata brands (BigBasket, Croma, Air India, 1mg, Westside); 12-month expiry, Tata-ecosystem only
The concern NeuCoins are unredeemable outside Tata apps — the card's entire value proposition collapses if your loyalty drifts to Amazon or Blinkit.
The bottom line
This entry-level co-branded card provides a cost-effective route into the Tata rewards ecosystem, offering up to 7% returns on the Tata Neu app for frequent brand shoppers alongside an easily recoverable ₹499 fee. However, clear limitations apply: NeuCoins are restricted strictly to Tata platforms, carry a 12-month expiry, and non-Tata spending yields a modest 1%. Ultimately, the card's financial return directly mirrors the extent of your household expenditure within the Tata brand network.

▼ Fee Effective 15 May 2026
Dynamic currency conversion markup raised to 1.75%
1% markup → 1.75% markup
HDFC's MITC: "Dynamic currency conversion Markup Fee: With effect from 15th May 2026, a Markup fee of 1.75% will be levied on all transactions carried out in Indian Currency at an international location or at merchants which are located in India but registered overseas." This is separate from, and stacks on top of, the card's ordinary foreign-currency markup. It is the charge you pay for accepting a terminal's offer to bill you in rupees while abroad - always decline that offer and pay in the local currency. It also catches India-based purchases from merchants registered overseas, which is easy to trigger without leaving the country. The PIXEL MITC dates the same change 17 May 2026.

▼ Redemption Effective 1 Aug 2025
NeuCoins given a 12-month expiry
No fixed expiry (effectively indefinite) → 12 months from end of credit month
From 1 Aug 2025, NeuCoins earned on Tata Neu HDFC cards (including the Plus) expire 12 months from the end of the month they are credited (earned 3 Aug 2025 -> valid to 31 Aug 2026); pre-existing balances were set to expire 31 Jul 2026. This ended indefinite hoarding, forcing earn-and-burn within a year across the Tata ecosystem.

▼ Fee Effective 1 Jul 2025
1% fee added on rent, wallet loads and online gaming
No category surcharge on rent, wallet loads or gaming → 1% on rent (cap Rs 4,999 per transaction); 1% on wallet loads and on online skill-based gaming above Rs 10,000 a calendar month (cap Rs 4,999 a month)
HDFC's MITC: "Rent Pay Transactions: W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee on transaction amount will be levied on rental transactions... Fee capped at Rs 4999 per transaction"; "Wallet Loading (excl PayZapp) - W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee will be levied on Wallet loading spends exceeding Rs 10,000 in a calendar month"; "Online Skill based Gaming - W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee... exceeding Rs 10,000 in a calendar month". These are charges on top of the fact that most HDFC cards already earn zero reward points on the same categories - you pay to spend, and earn nothing for it. PayZapp wallet loads are exempt from the wallet fee.

▼ Fee Effective 1 Jul 2025
1% fee on utilities above Rs 50,000 and on third-party education payments
No surcharge on utility or education payments → 1% on utility spends above Rs 50,000 a calendar month (cap Rs 4,999 a month); 1% on education paid through third-party apps
HDFC's MITC: "Utility Charges: 1% fee will be levied on utility spends exceeding Rs 50,000 per Calendar month for consumer cards... Fee capped at Rs 4999 per month"; "Education Charges: 1% fee... on Education transactions done through third party applications like (but not limited to) CRED, Nobroker, Cheq etc." Paying school or college fees DIRECTLY to the institution is not charged - only routing them through a third-party app is. A 1% fee also applies to fuel transactions above Rs 15,000.

▼ Reward Effective 1 Jul 2025
Insurance reward points capped, online gaming stops earning
Insurance uncapped on most cards; online skill-based gaming earned points → Insurance capped at 2,000 reward points a month (5,000 on Diners Black, 10,000 on Infinia); online skill-based gaming earns nothing
HDFC's MITC: "With effect from 1st July 2025, Reward Points accrued for insurance transactions will have a maximum cap of... 2000 per month for all other credit cards" and "With effect from 1st July 2025, Online Skill-Based gaming transactions will not earn Reward Points/CashPoints on all the cards." Insurance premiums are a common way to hit a milestone quickly, so the cap matters more than its size suggests.

▼ Reward Effective 1 Jul 2025
Insurance-spend NeuCoins capped monthly
Insurance earned base NeuCoins with a looser cap → 2,000 NeuCoins per month on insurance spends
As part of HDFC's 1 Jul 2025 bank-wide changes, NeuCoins on insurance transactions were capped at 2,000 per calendar month (the 'all other cards' bucket the Tata Neu Plus sits in). Insurance earns only the 1% base rate on the Plus, so the cap binds around Rs 2 lakh of monthly premium.

Online skill-based gaming stops earning NeuCoins
Online skill-based gaming earned NeuCoins → No NeuCoins on online skill-based gaming (MCC 5816)
Effective 1 July 2025 HDFC stopped awarding NeuCoins on online skill-based gaming, pinned to MCC 5816. It lands alongside the bank-wide 1% fee on gaming spends above Rs 10,000 a calendar month, so the same transaction now earns nothing and costs extra. Our timeline had previously folded this exclusion into the 1 January 2023 cap batch, two and a half years too early; that event has been corrected.

Domestic lounge access moved to spend milestone
Swipe-based complimentary domestic access → Rs 50,000/quarter spend -> 1 voucher/quarter (max 4/yr)
Effective 10 Jun 2025, HDFC discontinued direct swipe-based domestic lounge access and moved the Plus to a spend-milestone voucher system: spend Rs 50,000+ in a calendar quarter to earn 1 complimentary domestic lounge voucher that quarter, up to 4 per year. Vouchers must be claimed within 120 days of qualification and used within 180 days of issue.

2024 2 changes — 2 cuts
▼ Reward Effective 1 Sept 2024
Education paid through third-party apps stops earning NeuCoins
Education payments earned NeuCoins → No NeuCoins on education routed through third-party apps
HDFC's Tata Neu terms add, effective 1 September 2024, that no NeuCoins accrue on "Education payments through third-party apps (CRED, Cheq, MobiKwik)". Paying a school, college or university DIRECTLY still earns — it is the routing through a bill-payment app that is excluded, which is easy to trigger without realising it. EDUCATION is a live spend category in our engine, so this is a real earning change rather than a documentation note.

UPI NeuCoins earning curtailed on non-Tata UPI
Eligible UPI earned NeuCoins broadly (cap 500/mo) → 1% only on Tata Neu UPI ID; 0.25% on other UPI IDs (cap 500/mo)
From 1 Aug 2024, RuPay UPI earning on the Plus was split: 1% back as NeuCoins only on spends made with the Tata Neu UPI ID, cut to 0.25% on other UPI IDs (GPay/PhonePe/Paytm), with total UPI NeuCoins capped at 500 per calendar month. The 2%/1% card-swipe rates were unchanged.

Effective 1 Jan 2023, HDFC's bank-wide cap batch reached the Tata Neu Plus: NeuCoins on grocery/supermarket spends were capped at 1,000 NeuCoins per calendar month (half the Infinity's 2,000), and no NeuCoins accrue on fuel, wallet loads, rent, government transactions or smart-EMI. Non-Tata base earning stayed at 1%. (Online gaming was NOT part of this batch — HDFC excluded it on 1 July 2025, recorded separately below.)
