IRCTC SBI Card Premier

Mid-tierFee variesRewardsTravelDining

The IRCTC SBI Premier is a rare card built specifically around railway booking — up to 10% value-back on AC-class IRCTC tickets (reward points redeem 1:1 against IRCTC) plus a 1% railway transaction-charge waiver and railway-station lounge access (8 visits/year), for ₹1,499. Off-rail it earns a 1 RP per ₹125 base — about 0.8%, because SBI sweeps the points to your IRCTC account monthly where each is worth ₹1 — plus 3X on dining and on utility bills paid by standing instruction, and 4% on IRCTC air bookings and e-catering (capped at 750 points a statement cycle). The fee waives at ₹2 lakh. For the crores of Indians whose intercity travel is rail, it is not just useful, it is the only card that respects that reality, and it pays for itself within months for a regular traveller. Off-rail earning is ordinary and points redeem only against IRCTC tickets, so pair it with a generalist.

SBI's T&C says 10 Reward Points per ₹125 (8%) on AC-class IRCTC tickets; IRCTC markets the same benefit as 'up to 10% per ₹100'. We use SBI's figure. Air and e-catering earn 5 RP per ₹125 (4%), capped at 750 points a statement cycle. Plus a 1% railway transaction-charge saving

2.4% on Dining

3 RP per ₹125 (~2.4%) on dining and on utility bills paid by STANDING INSTRUCTION — SBI pays this on auto-debits, not one-off utility payments

Should you get it?

Best for: IRCTC regular booker (2+ train trips/month), Corporate traveller on Rajdhani or Shatabdi class, Does not fly domestically — train is the primary inter-city mode, Family of 4 booking multiple tickets per journey

Mid tier — a solid all-rounder for steady monthly spend.

Strongest value if you spend heavily on Travel ( 8% back).

Frequent travellers benefit from the included airport lounge access.

✓ Pros

  • Highest IRCTC reward rate — up to 10% value-back on AC-class train tickets, far above the standard reward on any general card
  • Railway lounge access at 8 major stations — wait in comfort on long journeys
  • Annual fee of ₹1,499 recovered within 3–4 train bookings at the accelerated earn rate

✕ Cons

  • Value entirely concentrated in IRCTC bookings — non-IRCTC spend earns a standard rate
  • Points hit full value only against IRCTC bookings — SBI transfers the whole balance to IRCTC on the 15th of each month, so there is no catalogue fallback
  • No airport lounge access — travellers who mix train and air travel need a separate card

How to redeem rewards

Ways to convert what you earn into real value.

🎁 Points are swept to your IRCTC loyalty account on the 15th of every month — the SBI Card balance then reads zero, so the Shop & Smile catalogue is not a route on this card

🎁 Redeem the transferred points against IRCTC train and air ticket bookings at 1 point = ₹1

The concern Points redeem only against IRCTC tickets — SBI sweeps the whole balance to IRCTC monthly, so the ₹1 rate is real but only if you actually book AC rail. Off-rail earning is a modest 0.8% base, so the card's value is entirely tied to how much you travel by train.

The bottom line

The IRCTC SBI Premier stands out as an unmatched specialist for domestic train journeys, combining up to 10% reward return on AC-class rail bookings with complimentary railway station lounge access and transaction charge waivers that quickly recoup the annual fee for frequent passengers. Its main limitation is narrow redemption flexibility: everyday non-rail earn rates are standard and accrued points can only be used on IRCTC ticket purchases, making it an ideal co-brand to pair with a general-purpose lifestyle or cashback card rather than using it as a solitary primary card.

Rail accident cover withdrawn

Air ₹50L + Rail ₹10L cover → Air ₹50L retained; Rail ₹10L withdrawn

SBI's notice, carried verbatim in the current Premier T&C booklet, reads: "With effect from 26th July'25, the complimentary Rail Accident insurance coverage of Rs. 10 lakhs currently offered on your IRCTC SBI Card Premier discontinued." CORRECTED 2026-08-06: we had recorded BOTH covers as withdrawn. Clause 13 of the same current booklet still grants "an air accident cover of 50 lakh by the United India Insurance Company Limited", and IRCTC publishes a ₹1 lakh fraud liability cover alongside it. The rail cover is genuinely gone; the air cover was never part of this notice. Our earlier fix removed a real, live benefit while correcting a false one.
