IndusInd Bank ePay Amex Credit Card

Entry levelFee variesCashbackRewardsFuelTravelDining

The IndusInd Bank ePay Amex is a lifetime-free, online-first American Express card whose rewards are built around how often you transact rather than how much. Each qualifying transaction of ₹500 or more earns 4 Reward Points for your first four transactions in a statement cycle, 8 Points from the fifth to tenth, and 10 Points on every transaction after the tenth. Because the earn is per TRANSACTION rather than per rupee, the flat 1 point per ₹100 we model is only a proxy at a ₹500-ish ticket — it flatters larger baskets and understates a wallet full of small ones. Reward Points are modest in value — 1 Point = ₹0.35 for cash credit or vouchers, or 4 Points to 1 KrisFlyer mile — so the real return is small and depends heavily on splitting spends into many ₹500-plus transactions; fuel earns nothing at all. The much-quoted perk is behavioural, and needs care: IndusInd's complete published statement is "Get 5% cashback annually every time on payment of total due amount within 7 days of statement generation." It names no base the 5% applies to and no cap, and the MITC is silent, so we do not model it and neither should you until the bank quantifies it. Welcome benefit is a 3-month Zomato Gold membership — explicitly a one-time first-year benefit that IndusInd says will not be extended or renewed under any circumstances, so it is a joining bonus, not an annual perk. Spend ₹2 lakh in an anniversary year for a Times Prime membership worth ₹1,199; and a loyalty bonus doubles points in your twelfth month if you make at least one ₹500-plus transaction in each of the prior eleven — a frequency condition, not a spend target. As an American Express card it is not on the RuPay-UPI rails, so it is a card for online and card-present spends, not UPI scan-and-pay.

Welcome Benefit

~₹600 in vouchers, points or cashback on card activation

Frequency-based, not flat — 4 Reward Points per transaction (1st–4th in a statement cycle), 8 (5th–10th), 10 (11th onward); each transaction must be ₹500+. The 0.0100 rate is a proxy at a ~₹500 ticket, so it flatters larger baskets. 1 Point = ₹0.35; 4 Points = 1 KrisFlyer mile

Should you get it?

Best for: Frequent small-ticket online shoppers (many ₹500+ transactions), Anyone wanting a free secondary Amex card for online spends, Someone who will hold it long enough to reach the 12th-month double-points bonus

Entry tier — great for first-time and lower-spend users.

Strongest value if you spend heavily on Other ( 0.35% back).

✓ Pros

  • Lifetime-free — no joining or annual fee
  • Rewards frequency, so many small ₹500-plus online buys earn more than one large one
  • Welcome 3-month Zomato Gold membership (first year only, not renewed)
  • Times Prime membership (₹1,199) on ₹2 lakh anniversary-year spend, plus double points in month 12 if you transact in each of the prior 11

✕ Cons

  • Reward Points are worth only ₹0.35 each — a low base return
  • Rewards are transaction-count-based, so large single spends earn poorly; you must split into many ₹500+ transactions
  • The 5% cashback is unquantified: IndusInd publishes no base it applies to and no cap, and the MITC is silent, so its real worth cannot be calculated from anything the bank has written
  • The Zomato Gold membership is a one-time first-year benefit only — IndusInd states it will not be extended or renewed under any circumstances, so it does not recur
  • Fuel spends earn no reward points at all — IndusInd zeroed fuel accrual portfolio-wide on 1 April 2018
  • American Express network — narrower acceptance and no RuPay UPI
  • Reward points accrue only on spend up to your assigned credit limit in each statement cycle — IndusInd's own worked example forfeits 800 of 1,800 points
  • Redemption is punishing on a card that earns this little: ₹149 + 18% GST for cash credit (₹100 for every other category), so the 500-point minimum cash redemption is worth ₹175.00 against ₹175.82 of fee — you pay to redeem. One such redemption is roughly a quarter of the card's realistic annual reward
  • Cash redemption is capped at 2,500 reward points a calendar month, needs a 500-point minimum, and since 1 April 2025 may draw on only half your points balance
  • From 15 June 2026 fuel spends above ₹30,000 a statement cycle attract 1% + GST, dynamic currency conversion on an overseas merchant billing in rupees costs 2% + GST, and ground transport above ₹40,000 a cycle attracts 1% + GST

How to redeem rewards

Ways to convert what you earn into real value.

🎁 Cash credit against the statement (1 Point = ₹0.35), minimum 500 points, capped at 2,500 points a calendar month and — since 1 April 2025 — at half your points balance

🎁 E-vouchers from partner brands (1 Point = ₹0.35)

🎁 KrisFlyer mile transfer (400 Reward Points = 100 miles, i.e. 4:1), minimum 500 points in multiples of 100, capped at 10,000 points a calendar month

🎁 Redemption is not free: ₹149 plus 18% GST for cash credit, ₹100 for every other category. At ₹0.35 a point the 500-point minimum is worth ₹175.00 against ₹175.82 of fee, so the smallest cash redemption is net negative — redeem in large batches, or take vouchers where the fee is ₹100

Full calculator, every currency → The concern Base rewards are low and transaction-count-based (points worth just ₹0.35 each), the 5% cashback is published with no base and no cap so its real worth is unknowable, and being American Express it is not UPI-linked — acceptance is narrower than a RuPay or Visa card.

The bottom line

The IndusInd ePay Amex offers a niche reward mechanism where points (valued at ₹0.35 each) accumulate based on monthly transaction counts above ₹500 rather than total rupees spent, making it best suited for frequent small online payments. Its primary advantage is its lifetime-free structure with zero recurring fees. While the headline 5% prompt-payment cashback is widely cited, the lack of published terms or caps makes it an unverified bonus rather than a guaranteed return. It serves effectively as a backup digital card, though its American Express network precludes RuPay UPI usage.

▼ Fee Observed 13 May 2026 · Effective 15 Jun 2026

Dynamic Currency Conversion fee doubled 1% → 2%

1% + taxes → 2% + GST

From 15 June 2026 the Dynamic Currency Conversion mark-up — levied when an international transaction, or one at an India-based merchant registered overseas, is billed in rupees rather than the local currency — doubled from 1% to 2% + GST on the ePay Amex. Premium variants were held at 1%. DCC is avoidable: always choose to be billed in the merchant's local currency.

Fuel fee threshold cut ₹50,000 → ₹30,000 a cycle

1% + GST above ₹50,000/cycle → 1% + GST above ₹30,000/cycle

From 15 June 2026 IndusInd charges 1% + GST on cumulative fuel spends above ₹30,000 in a statement cycle on the ePay Amex, down from the ₹50,000 threshold that applied until 14 June 2026. The bank split its portfolio in two and placed this card in the lower ₹30,000 tier; premium variants kept ₹50,000. This is a fee on the spend itself, separate from the fuel surcharge waiver.

New 1% fee on transport spends above ₹40,000 a cycle

No transport fee → 1% + GST above ₹40,000/cycle

From 15 June 2026 IndusInd levies 1% + GST on cumulative transport spends above ₹40,000 in a statement cycle — MCCs 4111, 4112, 4131 and 4784, covering cabs, rail, bus and tolls. Air travel is excluded. Only Pioneer Private, Pioneer Heritage and Indus Solitaire are exempt, so this card is in scope.

2025 1 change — 1 cut

▼ Benefit Effective 21 Dec 2025

Complimentary air-accident insurance withdrawn

Complimentary air-accident cover provided with the card → No air-accident cover

On 21 December 2025 IndusInd discontinued the complimentary air-accident insurance feature across its credit cards, stating simply that the coverage "stands discontinued". The bank published no replacement and named no exempt card. Note that several IndusInd product pages still described the cover months afterwards — the Avios, Duo, Pioneer Private and Platinum pages all still advertised it in August 2026 — so a reader may encounter the old wording on IndusInd's own site; the dated withdrawal notice is the operative statement. Other insurance benefits are unaffected: lost-card liability, Total Protect fraud cover, travel insurance and purchase protection continue where the card carried them.

◆ Launch Effective Oct 2023

IndusInd Bank ePay Amex launched as a lifetime-free virtual card

IndusInd launched a virtual-first American Express card with nil joining and nil annual fee. Its reward engine is frequency-based rather than rate-based: 4 Reward Points on each of the 1st–4th transactions in a statement cycle, 8 on the 5th–10th and 10 on every transaction beyond the 10th, each qualifying transaction needing to be ₹500 or more. The headline draw is 5% cashback for paying the full statement within 7 days of generation; launch extras were a complimentary 3-month Zomato Gold membership and a Times Prime membership (worth ₹1,199) on ₹2 lakh of anniversary-year spend.
