IDFC FIRST Power Credit Card

Mid-tierFee variesCashbackRewardsFuel

The IDFC FIRST Power is a serviceable, very cheap fuel-and-bills card for IDFC account holders who fill up at HPCL. The card itself earns 21X reward points (~3.5%) on HPCL fuel, capped at 700 points (₹175) a statement cycle — the ₹499 Power+ variant reaches 30X (~5%) — plus 15X (~2.5%) on grocery, utility and FASTag spends, roadside assistance and accident cover, all for a ₹199 fee waived at ₹50,000 of annual spend. HPCL's own HP Pay app pays a further ~1.5% in Happy Coins (up to 600 coins a month on ₹10,000 of app spend) — that is HPCL's separate loyalty currency, not the card's reward points. Welcome benefits are worth about ₹2,250: a ₹250 HPCL voucher, 5% cashback on the first EMI up to ₹1,000, and ₹1,000-plus of merchant offers. Booking through the IDFC FIRST app also earns accelerated travel points (26.67% on hotels, 13.33% on flights) — portal rates we deliberately keep out of our scoring baseline. It will not out-earn dedicated rivals on fuel, so its case is low cost plus HP loyalty plus an existing IDFC relationship. Get the network right first: it is HPCL, not BPCL.

Should you get it?

Best for: IDFC FIRST account holder who fuels at HPCL, Low-fee entry card for IDFC customers wanting fuel rewards, UPI digital payment user in the IDFC ecosystem, Fuel card in a multi-card wallet for HPCL users

Mid tier — a solid all-rounder for steady monthly spend.

Strongest value if you spend heavily on Fuel ( 3.5% back).

✓ Pros

  • Earns 21X (~3.5%) reward points on HPCL fuel purchases
  • Very low ₹199 annual fee (waived at ₹50K spend)
  • Welcome benefits worth ₹2,250 — ₹250 HPCL voucher, 5% first-EMI cashback up to ₹1,000, merchant offers
  • Accelerated travel points on IDFC FIRST app bookings (26.67% hotels / 13.33% flights — portal rates, kept out of our scoring baseline)
  • RuPay UPI-linked for everyday digital payments
  • Good companion card for IDFC FIRST account holders who also fuel at HPCL

✕ Cons

  • Rival fuel co-brands like the BPCL Octane (SBI) earn more at their own pumps — ~7.25% vs this card's ~3.5% at HPCL
  • Not a dedicated fuel card — best treated as a bank relationship card with fuel bonus
  • Reward earn outside HPCL fuel is ordinary — 2X (~0.33%) on other spends
  • Only useful if you specifically bank with IDFC and fuel at HPCL

The concern The card's own fuel rate is 3.5%, capped at 700 points (₹175) a cycle — dedicated fuel cards earn more — and the ~5% headline leans on HPCL's separate HP Pay app. Non-HPCL fuel earns nothing, and spends outside the bonus categories earn just 2X (~0.33%).

The bottom line

This is a workable entry-level fuel-and-utility card for IDFC customers who happen to buy their petrol at HPCL. It handles that narrow job at minimal cost, though dedicated fuel cards will out-earn it — so the appeal here is really the low fee combined with the convenience of an existing bank relationship. Just be sure you're looking at the HPCL co-brand and not BPCL.

Bonus reward points on travel booked in the IDFC FIRST app

No app-booking bonus → 50X bonus on hotels, 30X bonus on flights

IDFC added accelerated earning on travel booked through the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app — 50X bonus reward points on hotels and 30X on flights, the same uplift given to the pricier Power+. A rare positive, though it only pays inside the bank's own booking channel.

Fair-usage fees on heavy FASTag and railway spends

No FASTag or railway spend fee → 1% fee above ₹10,000 FASTag or ₹25,000 railway per cycle

FASTag recharges (MCC 4784) above ₹10,000 in a billing cycle now attract a 1% fee on the whole cycle's FASTag amount, and railway spends (MCC 4111, 4112) above ₹25,000 do the same. FASTag is one of this card's accelerated categories, so the heaviest users of a headline benefit are the ones now charged for it.

Whole cycle's reward points forfeited if minimum due is missed

Points accrued regardless of payment behaviour → No points for any cycle where the minimum amount due is unpaid by the due date

From 18 January 2026, failing to pay at least the Minimum Amount Due by the payment due date voids reward points for that entire billing cycle, and any points already posted for it are reversed. On an entry-level card sold on affordability, one missed minimum payment now costs a full cycle of earning on top of the interest and late fee.

2024 4 changes — 2 cuts, 1 improvement, 1 neutral

▲ Reward Observed 1 Apr 2024 · Effective 1 May 2024

Fuel earning raised from 15X to 21X

15X, up to 500 RP (₹125) per statement cycle → 21X, up to 700 RP (₹175) per statement cycle

Accelerated HPCL fuel earning rose from 15X to 21X and the per-cycle ceiling from 500 to 700 reward points (₹125 → ₹175). A genuine increase, but a modest one in absolute terms — and it arrived in the same notice that removed the fuel-surcharge waiver, which IDFC said was folded into this category. Note the sibling Power+ was lifted further, to 30X / 2,400 RP.

Verification: IDFC FIRST Bank ↗ · Confidence: High

▼ Benefit Observed 1 Apr 2024 · Effective 1 May 2024

Fuel-surcharge waiver withdrawn

1% surcharge waiver on all fuel transactions → Not applicable — value folded into the fuel-rewards category

The 1% fuel-surcharge waiver was removed, IDFC's stated reasoning being that the equivalent value now sits inside the enlarged fuel-rewards category. The saving stops being an automatic per-transaction waiver and becomes capped reward points instead — and this variant's cap is only 700 points (₹175) a cycle, so fuel spend beyond it now carries the surcharge with nothing offsetting it.

Verification: IDFC FIRST Bank ↗ · Confidence: High

▼ Fee Observed 1 Apr 2024 · Effective 1 May 2024

Rent surcharge floor and utility commercial-use fee introduced

Rent 1% of transaction value; no utility fee on personal use → Rent 1% subject to a ₹249 minimum per transaction; utility 1% above ₹20,000/cycle

The rent/property-management surcharge (MCC 6513) kept its 1% rate but gained a ₹249 minimum per transaction, which bites hardest on small rent payments. Utility spends above ₹20,000 in a billing cycle were reclassified as commercial use and now attract a 1% fee; personal-use utility spend below that threshold stays free.

◆ Reward Observed 1 Apr 2024 · Effective 1 May 2024

UPI earning flattened to 2X and uncapped

Earned at the underlying category rate (fuel, FASTag, grocery, utility), capped per category → Flat 2X across all categories, uncapped — fuel, insurance and EMI excluded

UPI spends stopped inheriting the underlying category rate and moved to a flat 2X with no cap. Lateral rather than good or bad: uncapping helps broad everyday UPI use, but fuel is now excluded from the UPI rate, so UPI-routed fuel payments must earn through the fuel-rewards category instead.

◆ Launch Effective 31 Mar 2023

FIRST Power launched with HPCL on RuPay

IDFC FIRST Bank, HPCL and RuPay launched the co-branded FIRST Power and FIRST Power+ fuel cards together on 31 March 2023. Power was the ₹199 (joining and annual, waived at ₹50,000 annual spend) entry variant: accelerated reward points on HPCL fuel up to a ₹5,000 monthly cap, a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver, reward points on grocery, utility and IDFC FIRST FASTag, UPI earning on a RuPay rail, personal-accident and lost-card cover, and complimentary roadside assistance. The best fuel return needed payment through the HP Pay app, which added HPCL's own 1.5% cashback on top of the card's points.
