HDFC Bank Diners Club Privilege Credit Card
Positioned just below the Diners Black, the HDFC Diners Club Privilege serves as the bank's more approachable doorway into its Diners Club lineup. Everyday spending builds up at a base 4 Reward Points per ₹200 (roughly 1% once points are valued at ₹0.50 through SmartBuy), while Swiggy and Zomato orders earn at 5X (up to 2,500 RP a month) and SmartBuy bookings can reach 10X — 10X on hotels, 5X on flights, and 3X on trains, capped at 4,000 RP monthly. New cardholders who spend ₹75,000 within 90 days unlock a year of Swiggy One and Times Prime memberships at no extra cost, and hitting ₹1.5 lakh of spend in a quarter brings a ₹1,500 voucher every three months. Lounge access changed as of 1 July 2026: it's no longer automatic, requiring ₹60,000 of spend in the prior quarter to unlock 2 domestic and 1 international voucher. The ₹1,000 annual fee disappears once ₹3 lakh is spent in the year. One thing worth flagging: a point fetches ₹0.50 through SmartBuy but drops to just ₹0.20 if redeemed as statement credit, so how you cash in matters as much as how much you earn.

The bottom line
This is a capable mid-premium card, but getting real value out of it means routing spend through the right channels rather than swiping and forgetting — think 5X dining, SmartBuy earnings up to 10X, and a pair of memberships worth more on their own than the ₹1,000 fee. Two things temper the enthusiasm: statement-credit redemptions only return ₹0.20 a point, so SmartBuy is the route that actually pays, and the lounge perk stopped being automatic in July 2026. Cardholders who stay on top of the portals and the quarterly spend thresholds will still find it pulls its weight.

▼ Lounge Effective 1 Jul 2026
Lounge access became spend-gated (₹60,000/quarter)
2 domestic + 1 international lounge visits per quarter, unconditional → Same 2 + 1 per quarter, but only on ₹60,000 spend in the previous quarter
HDFC's per-card product-feature update tied the Diners Club Privilege's complimentary lounge access (2 domestic + 1 international per calendar quarter) to a spend gate: from the quarter starting 1 July 2026 the vouchers unlock only if the cardholder spent ₹60,000 or more in the preceding calendar quarter. A previously automatic benefit now has to be earned each quarter.

▼ Reward Effective 1 Jul 2026
SmartBuy brand-voucher earning capped at 3,000 RP/month
Full 4,000 RP/month accelerated pool usable via vouchers → 3,000 RP/month sub-cap on Brand Vouchers (GyFTR/Woohoo)
From 1 July 2026 HDFC carved out a separate 3,000-Reward-Point monthly sub-cap for accelerated points earned on Brand Vouchers (GyFTR/Woohoo) bought through SmartBuy. Diners Club Privilege is explicitly named: its overall SmartBuy accelerated cap stays 4,000 RP/month, but no more than 3,000 of those can now come from brand vouchers, so the easy voucher route to the monthly ceiling is closed.

▼ Reward Effective 15 May 2026
Base earn rate cut ~25% (per ₹150 → per ₹200)
4 Reward Points per ₹150 (~1.33% at ₹0.50/point) → 4 Reward Points per ₹200 (~1% at ₹0.50/point)
Effective 15 May 2026 HDFC widened the base earning block from ₹150 to ₹200, cutting the general reward rate on Diners Club Privilege by roughly a quarter (from ~1.33% to ~1% on SmartBuy point value). The accelerated Swiggy/Zomato and SmartBuy rates were unchanged; only the base retail-spend rate was trimmed.

▼ Fee Effective 15 May 2026
Dynamic Currency Conversion markup revised to 1.75%
1.75% on INR-billed international / foreign-registered transactions
The same 15 May 2026 update revised the Dynamic Currency Conversion markup to 1.75% on any transaction billed in Indian rupees at an international location, or in INR with a merchant located in India but registered abroad. This is separate from the 3.5% forex markup and raises the cost of paying in INR overseas. (The same notice also introduced a ₹199 lost/stolen/damaged-card re-issuance fee.)

▼ Fee Effective 15 May 2026
Dynamic currency conversion markup raised to 1.75%
1% markup → 1.75% markup
HDFC's MITC: "Dynamic currency conversion Markup Fee: With effect from 15th May 2026, a Markup fee of 1.75% will be levied on all transactions carried out in Indian Currency at an international location or at merchants which are located in India but registered overseas." This is separate from, and stacks on top of, the card's ordinary foreign-currency markup. It is the charge you pay for accepting a terminal's offer to bill you in rupees while abroad - always decline that offer and pay in the local currency. It also catches India-based purchases from merchants registered overseas, which is easy to trigger without leaving the country. The PIXEL MITC dates the same change 17 May 2026.

2025 3 changes — 3 cuts
▼ Fee Effective 1 Jul 2025
1% fee added on rent, wallet loads and online gaming
No category surcharge on rent, wallet loads or gaming → 1% on rent (cap Rs 4,999 per transaction); 1% on wallet loads and on online skill-based gaming above Rs 10,000 a calendar month (cap Rs 4,999 a month)
HDFC's MITC: "Rent Pay Transactions: W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee on transaction amount will be levied on rental transactions... Fee capped at Rs 4999 per transaction"; "Wallet Loading (excl PayZapp) - W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee will be levied on Wallet loading spends exceeding Rs 10,000 in a calendar month"; "Online Skill based Gaming - W.e.f. 1st July 2025, 1% fee... exceeding Rs 10,000 in a calendar month". These are charges on top of the fact that most HDFC cards already earn zero reward points on the same categories - you pay to spend, and earn nothing for it. PayZapp wallet loads are exempt from the wallet fee.

▼ Fee Effective 1 Jul 2025
1% fee on utilities above Rs 50,000 and on third-party education payments
No surcharge on utility or education payments → 1% on utility spends above Rs 50,000 a calendar month (cap Rs 4,999 a month); 1% on education paid through third-party apps
HDFC's MITC: "Utility Charges: 1% fee will be levied on utility spends exceeding Rs 50,000 per Calendar month for consumer cards... Fee capped at Rs 4999 per month"; "Education Charges: 1% fee... on Education transactions done through third party applications like (but not limited to) CRED, Nobroker, Cheq etc." Paying school or college fees DIRECTLY to the institution is not charged - only routing them through a third-party app is. A 1% fee also applies to fuel transactions above Rs 15,000.

▼ Reward Effective 1 Jul 2025
Insurance reward points capped, online gaming stops earning
Insurance uncapped on most cards; online skill-based gaming earned points → Insurance capped at 2,000 reward points a month (5,000 on Diners Black, 10,000 on Infinia); online skill-based gaming earns nothing
HDFC's MITC: "With effect from 1st July 2025, Reward Points accrued for insurance transactions will have a maximum cap of... 2000 per month for all other credit cards" and "With effect from 1st July 2025, Online Skill-Based gaming transactions will not earn Reward Points/CashPoints on all the cards." Insurance premiums are a common way to hit a milestone quickly, so the cap matters more than its size suggests.

2024 1 change — 1 cut
▼ Fee Effective 1 Aug 2024
₹50 reward-redemption fee + 1% fee on rent/utility/fuel spends
No redemption fee; no category surcharges → ₹50 per statement-credit redemption; 1% on rent/education/utility/fuel over thresholds
From 1 August 2024 HDFC added a ₹50 fee on every redemption of Reward Points to statement credit and a 1% fee (capped ₹3,000/txn) on rent and third-party education payments (via CRED/Paytm/CheQ/MobiKwik), on utility bills above ₹50,000, and on fuel above ₹15,000. Diners Club Privilege is NOT on the redemption-fee exemption list (which covers only Infinia, Diners Black, BizBlack Metal, Swiggy HDFC and Flipkart Wholesale), so it is fully affected.

▼ Redemption Effective 1 Feb 2023
Statement-credit redemption capped at 50,000 RP/month
Effectively uncapped → 50,000 RP/month
As part of the same January 2023 rewards revision, from 1 February 2023 HDFC capped the redemption of Reward Points as statement credit/cashback at 50,000 RP per calendar month for all cards outside the top tier (the "all other cards" bucket that includes Diners Club Privilege). SmartBuy flight/hotel point redemption was likewise held to 50,000 RP/month for this bucket.

HDFC's January 2023 rewards revision, which explicitly named Diners Club Privilege, capped grocery/supermarket earning at 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month, stopped points on rent paid through third-party apps, and excluded government transactions. Insurance/utility/ telecom earning was also held to 2,000 RP/day per category.

◆ Reward Effective 1 Feb 2022
SmartBuy accelerated earning restructured (cashback → points)
Cashback model (up to ₹2,000/month); 10X on flights/bus/trains → Points model; 5X on flights/bus/trains, 10X retained on hotels/partners; 4,000 RP/mo cap
Effective 1 February 2022 HDFC converted the Diners Club Privilege's SmartBuy benefit from a cashback model (up to ₹2,000/month) to a points model capped at 4,000 bonus Reward Points per month (2,000/day). Flights, bus and train bookings dropped from 10X to 5X while hotels and Diners partners kept 10X — a lateral restructure that Live From A Lounge described as a slightly higher headline reward rate overall.

◆ Launch Effective 2020
HDFC Diners Club Privilege launched
HDFC introduced the current Diners Club Privilege around the turn of 2019–2020 (CardExpert reviewed it as a recently launched card in January 2020) as an accessible ₹1,000 Diners Club option a rung below Diners Black. At launch it earned 4 Reward Points per ₹150 (~1.33% on SmartBuy), up to 10X on SmartBuy (accelerated cap 10,000 RP), 5X on Swiggy/Zomato, and offered 12 domestic + 12 international lounge visits per year. These birth terms were later trimmed by the 2022–2026 changes above.
