Axis Bank Freecharge Plus Credit Card
The Axis Bank Freecharge Plus is essentially the cashback-focused version of the base Freecharge card, built around Axis's own Freecharge platform for people who handle recharges and bill payments through the app. It pays 5% cashback on Freecharge app transactions — recharges and bill payments specifically — 2% on local commute spending, and 1% on everything else that qualifies. The commute category turns out to be broader than the marketing suggests: it covers taxi, bus, suburban-transport and car-rental merchant codes generally, not just Ola and Uber rides. Cashback kicks in only on transactions of ₹100 or more, and the list of exclusions is fairly extensive — fuel, wallet top-ups, cash withdrawals, gift cards, gold, EMI payments, rent, government payments, insurance, education, and any utility bill paid outside the Freecharge app all earn nothing. Notably, Axis doesn't cap the 5% rate at any monthly level, and none of the tiers carry a published ceiling — the bank's own worked example shows a full 5% return on ₹15,000 of Freecharge spend. There's no fuel surcharge refund on this card either; it's explicitly listed in the Key Fact Sheet among cards where that refund doesn't apply. The ₹350 annual fee is waived once you cross ₹50,000 in yearly spend. Like its base sibling, Axis treats this as invite-only through the Freecharge app, and our own research found no sign of new issuance — so we're marking new applications as paused, while existing cardholders retain the card and its cashback terms unchanged.

- No fuel surcharge refund — the Key Fact Sheet explicitly lists this card among those excluded

The concern The headline 5% rate is confined entirely to Freecharge app spending, and the exclusion list is substantial — pay a bill anywhere other than Freecharge, or spend outside commute categories, and you're back to a plain 1% return.
The bottom line
The Freecharge Plus works well as a focused cashback card if you genuinely route your bill payments through the Freecharge app: 5% on those transactions and 2% on cab rides are solid numbers for a ₹350 card that's easy to get waived at ₹50,000 of spend. That said, the lengthy exclusion list and the ₹100 minimum transaction floor mean it really only performs well within its specific lanes — spend outside Freecharge and local commute, and you're effectively on a flat 1% card. Best used as a companion to a primary card rather than your only one.
